~1 in 5Guam adults are estimated to be living with diabetes, diagnosed or not (IDF Diabetes Atlas, 2025). Guam’s own health survey counts about 1 in 8 adults as diagnosed.

This is not a distant cause. It is the island.

Depending on how it is counted, between 1 in 8 and 1 in 5 Guam adults are living with diabetes, and the rate has climbed for over a decade. People here die from diabetes at a rate about 78 percent higher than the US mainland, and Chamorro families carry more of the burden. Nearly every family has felt it.

The 2026 run puts eyes at the center. Diabetes is a leading cause of vision loss, and much of it is preventable when it is caught early. Sight in Motion is about moving your body and protecting your vision, together.

The run started with one man.

We run it because of Carl.

Carl T. Calvo Bordallo Butler was a Vietnam veteran who helped build the Guam Diabetes Association and led it as president for 20 years. He ran the island’s Diabetes Awareness 5K for 14 years.

The run went dormant for close to a decade. In 2023 the community brought it back, and the legacy of what Carl built kept going. We met his wife, Miss Winnie, and made the mission ours to carry.

One journey. One island. One purpose. Stronger together.

Run it.
Walk it.
Wheel it.

The 2K and the 5K are both run or walk. Bring the manåmko, bring the kids, bring the stroller and the wheelchair. This is not a race you have to be fast for. It is the island showing up together, as the sun goes down.

The heart of the mission

Free health screening. Bring the whole family.

Guam has one of the highest diabetes rates in the country, and many people do not know they have it. That is what an awareness run is really for. On event night there is free community health screening provided by Guam Diabetes Association and its volunteer nurses, open to everyone, runner or not.

  • Free for every participant and every spectator. You do not have to run to get screened.
  • Quick and private. Know your numbers, talk to someone, take the first step.
  • Bring your parents, bring your kids. Early is everything with diabetes.

A quiet first step. Free community health screening provided by Guam Diabetes Association and volunteer nurses, open to everyone, runner or not.

Where your support goes.

Run 4 Awareness Guam is organized by Reef Pursuit International Inc. The event supports Guam Diabetes Association and Famagu’on Fishing Camp: Future Generation Anglers. Free community health screening is provided by Guam Diabetes Association and volunteer nurses.

A Guam tradition since 1999.

The Diabetes Awareness Run has been part of this island for a long time. The theme changes. The mission does not. Run 4 Awareness Guam carries it forward, and keeps the whole record in one place.
